CONSORTIUM FOR THE QUALITY STANDARD PROTECTION OF TABLE OLIVES PDO “LA BELLA DAUNIA – CULTIVAR BELLA DI CERIGNOLA DOP”
Protected Designation of Origin table olives “La Bella della Daunia varietà Bella of Cerignola” is grown in the Communes of Cerignola, Ortanova, S. Ferdinando di Puglia, Stornara, Stornarella and Trinitapoli.
The “Bella of Cerignola” olive growing dates from immemorial times. According to some scholars, it was introduced in Italy about in the 15th century and it variously spread in the country side around Cerignola. Some authors believe that this cultivar derives from the olives “Orchites” of the Romans. However, at the moment, it is considered a native variety of the Cerignola area and the neighboring countries.
The Protection Consortium of the Oliva da Mensa D.O.P. La Bella della Daunia – cultivar Bella di Cerignola was founded on 3rd October 2002, in order to give prominence, defend and promote this fine variety of table olive.
It has an activity of surveillance and control of the production chain at different levels, it protects and gives prominence to the typicality and to the peculiar features of the product, assuring and steadily enhancing is quality for the consumer protection.
The table olive “La Bella della Daunia varietà Bella di Cerignola” is renowned for its big dimension, for its fine taste, for the beauty and consistency of its flesh. Its uncooked use and its good keeping make this table olives a suitable element in particular for many fast and digestive recipes as snack and aperitifs and for the enrichment of dishes, cooked or uncooked seasonings, and side dishes for meats and cheeses, that make it a typical product of the Mediterranean diet.
